VOLLEY
A shot hit before the ball bounces, usually close to the net. Volleying requires quick reflexes and is common in doubles play.
DEUCE
A score of 40-40 in tennis. From deuce, a player must win two consecutive points to win the game.
RALLY
A sequence of back-and-forth shots between players during a point. Long rallies are often the most exciting moments in a tennis match.
FOREHAND
A shot hit with the dominant side of the body, with the palm facing the direction of the shot. The forehand is typically a player's most powerful and frequently used shot.
BACKHAND
A shot hit with the back of the dominant hand facing the direction of the shot. Players use a one-handed or two-handed backhand depending on their technique.
MATCH
A complete tennis competition between two players or teams. A standard match consists of the best of three or five sets.
BASELINE
