PITCHER
The player who throws the ball toward the batter at the start of each play. A pitcher's job is to throw the ball in ways that are difficult for the batter to hit.
BATTER
The player who stands at home plate and attempts to hit the pitched ball. A batter's goal is to reach base or drive in runs.
INNING
A unit of play in baseball during which each team gets a turn to bat. A standard baseball game has nine innings.
DIAMOND
The square formed by the four bases on a baseball field. The diamond shape gives the field its iconic layout.

OUTFIELD
The grassy area beyond the infield, defended by three outfielders. The outfield extends to the warning track and the outfield wall.
UMPIRE
An official who oversees the game, making calls on balls and strikes, outs, and fair or foul balls. There are usually four umpires in professional baseball games.
STRIKE
A pitch that the batter swings at and misses, or one that passes through the strike zone without being swung at. Three strikes result in a strikeout.
HOMER
Short for home run, a homer occurs when the batter hits the ball out of the playing field in fair territory, allowing them to run all the bases and score.
CATCHER
The player who crouches behind home plate to receive pitches from the pitcher. The catcher also directs the defense and guards home plate against runners.
