Word List
TOUCHDOWN
A score worth six points in American football, achieved when a player carries or catches the ball in the opposing team's end zone.
QUARTERBACK
The player who leads the offense, calling plays in the huddle and passing or handing off the ball. The quarterback is usually the most prominent player on the field.
PUNT
A kick in which the quarterback or a specialized punter drops the ball and kicks it before it hits the ground. Teams punt on fourth down to push opponents back.
BLITZ
A defensive play in which linebackers or defensive backs rush toward the quarterback to pressure or sack them. A successful blitz can disrupt the opposing offense.
FUMBLE
When a player who has possession of the ball drops it before being downed. A fumble can be recovered by either team.
HUDDLE
A brief gathering of the offensive team before each play to receive the play call from the quarterback. The huddle allows the team to coordinate their next move.
TACKLE
To bring the ball carrier to the ground to stop their progress. A tackle ends the play and determines where the next one begins.
ENDZONE
The scoring areas at each end of a football field. A player must carry or catch the ball in the end zone to score a touchdown.
KICKOFF
The play that starts each half and follows each scoring play. One team kicks the ball to the other to begin each possession from a set field position.
SNAP
The act of the center passing the ball between their legs to the quarterback to begin a play. Every offensive play begins with a snap.
About Football
American football evolved from rugby in the late 19th century and has become the most-watched sport in the United States. The game combines physical athleticism with complex strategy, as teams attempt to advance the ball down a 100-yard field.
