Word List
FREESTYLE
A swimming event in which swimmers may use any stroke. In practice, competitors almost always use the front crawl, the fastest swimming stroke.
BACKSTROKE
A swimming stroke performed on the back with an alternating arm pull and a flutter kick. Backstroke is the only competitive stroke where swimmers start in the water.
BUTTERFLY
A powerful swimming stroke performed face-down with both arms moving simultaneously in a windmill motion, combined with a dolphin kick.
SPRINT
A short, fast swimming race. Sprint events like the 50-meter freestyle require explosive power and maximum speed from start to finish.
LANE
A designated strip of the pool separated by rope dividers, assigned to each competitor. Lane assignments are often based on qualifying times.
RELAY
A race in which a team of four swimmers each swim one segment of the total distance. Relay events are among the most exciting in competitive swimming.
STROKE
The specific technique used to move through the water. The four competitive strokes are freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
DIVE
The technique used to enter the water at the start of a race. A clean dive reduces drag and gives swimmers a fast start.
MEDLEY
A swimming competition in which each stroke is used in order: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. The medley relay features one swimmer per stroke.
TEMPO
The pace or rhythm of a swimmer's strokes. Maintaining a consistent tempo is key to efficient racing over longer distances.
About Swimming
Swimming is both a life skill and a competitive sport, with events ranging from short sprints to long-distance open water races. Competitive swimming features four main strokes, and it has been part of the Olympic Games since 1896.
