American citizenship comes with both rights and responsibilities. Citizens enjoy protections under the Constitution and the freedom to participate in democracy, but they also share duties like obeying the law, paying taxes, serving on juries, and (in some cases) registering for the draft. Many citizens are born in the United States; others earn citizenship through a process called naturalization.
This puzzle features citizenship vocabulary: the status of CITIZEN itself; processes like NATURALIZE and OATH; concepts like RIGHTS, DUTIES, LOYALTY, COMMUNITY, FREEDOM, EQUALITY, and JUSTICE.
Show students a few sample questions from the official US naturalization test (publicly available online). Have them work in pairs to answer, then discuss how those questions connect to the vocabulary in the puzzle. Reflect on what it means to be 'a good citizen' in their own school or community.
