Word List with Definitions
FEMUR
The thigh bone, the longest and strongest bone in the human body. The femur connects the hip to the knee and bears the body's weight during movement.
TIBIA
The larger of the two lower leg bones, commonly called the shinbone. The tibia runs from the knee to the ankle and is the main weight-bearing bone of the lower leg.
SKULL
The bony structure of the head that protects the brain and supports the face. The skull is made up of 22 fused bones and houses the sensory organs.
PELVIS
The bony structure at the base of the spine that connects the spine to the legs. The pelvis protects the bladder and reproductive organs and supports walking.
HUMERUS
The single bone of the upper arm, connecting the shoulder to the elbow. The humerus provides the attachment point for muscles that move the arm.
RADIUS
The shorter and more lateral of the two forearm bones, on the thumb side. The radius works with the ulna to allow the forearm to rotate.
STERNUM
The flat bone in the center of the chest, also called the breastbone. The sternum connects to the ribs via cartilage and protects the heart and lungs.
VERTEBRA
One of the 33 small bones that make up the spinal column. Vertebrae protect the spinal cord and support the body's weight while allowing flexible movement.
SCAPULA
The shoulder blade, a flat triangular bone on the upper back. The scapula connects the upper arm bone to the collarbone and anchors shoulder muscles.
FIBULA
The smaller of the two lower leg bones, running alongside the tibia. The fibula helps stabilize the ankle and supports the muscles of the lower leg.
About Bones of the Body
The human skeleton contains 206 bones that provide structure, protect organs, store minerals, and enable movement. Bones are living tissue that grows and repairs itself throughout life, and learning their names is a key part of anatomy education.
Bones of the Body Vocabulary
This puzzle features ten important bones of the human skeleton: leg bones like FEMUR, TIBIA, and FIBULA, arm bones like HUMERUS and RADIUS, the SKULL, PELVIS, STERNUM, VERTEBRA, and SCAPULA (shoulder blade).
