Word List
BASALT
A dark, fine-grained igneous rock formed when lava cools quickly on Earth's surface. Basalt forms much of the ocean floor and volcanic islands.
GRANITE
A coarse-grained igneous rock formed when magma cools slowly deep underground. Granite is one of the most common rocks in Earth's continental crust.
QUARTZ
One of the most abundant minerals on Earth, made of silicon dioxide. Quartz is found in many types of rocks and comes in a variety of colors and forms.
FOSSIL
The preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms embedded in rock. Fossils provide scientists with evidence about life on Earth millions of years ago.
TECTONIC
Relating to the large plates that make up Earth's outer shell. Tectonic plates move slowly, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains.
MAGMA
Molten rock located beneath Earth's surface. When magma reaches the surface through a volcano or crack, it is called lava.
EROSION
The wearing away of rock and soil by wind, water, ice, or other forces. Erosion shapes landscapes over time, carving valleys, canyons, and coastlines.
MINERAL
A naturally occurring inorganic solid with a specific chemical composition and crystal structure. Rocks are made up of one or more minerals.
SEDIMENT
Particles of rock, sand, or organic material deposited by wind, water, or ice. Over time, sediment layers can compact and harden into sedimentary rock.
MANTLE
The thick layer of hot, semi-solid rock beneath Earth's crust. The mantle makes up about 84% of Earth's total volume and drives the movement of tectonic plates.
About Geology
Geology is the study of Earth's solid structure, the rocks and minerals that compose it, and the processes that shape it over time. From mountain formation to erosion, geology helps explain the landscape we see around us.
Geology Vocabulary
This puzzle features rock types like BASALT and GRANITE, minerals like QUARTZ, and geological processes like EROSION and TECTONIC movement. The vocabulary covers both what Earth is made of and how its surface changes over time.
How to Use This Word Search in Class
Bring in rock samples and have students match puzzle vocabulary to actual specimens. After completing the word search, students can handle and classify rocks as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. This tactile experience makes the vocabulary stick.
