Word List
FOSSIL
The preserved remains or traces of an ancient organism found in rock. Fossils tell scientists what dinosaurs looked like, what they ate, and how they lived.
RAPTOR
A term used for theropod dinosaurs with large curved claws, such as Velociraptor and Deinonychus. Raptors were agile predators that likely hunted in packs.
TRIASSIC
The first period of the Mesozoic Era, lasting from about 252 to 201 million years ago. Dinosaurs first appeared during the late Triassic period.
JURASSIC
The middle period of the Mesozoic Era, from about 201 to 145 million years ago. The Jurassic period saw the rise of giant dinosaurs like Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus.
PREDATOR
An animal that hunts and eats other animals. Large predatory dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Allosaurus were apex predators of their time.
HERBIVORE
An animal that eats only plants. Many of the largest dinosaurs, including Diplodocus and Triceratops, were herbivores that grazed on vegetation.
CRETACEOUS
The last period of the Mesozoic Era, from about 145 to 66 million years ago. The Cretaceous ended with a mass extinction that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs.
EXTINCT
No longer existing as a living species. Dinosaurs (other than birds) became extinct approximately 66 million years ago, likely after a massive asteroid impact.
SKELETON
The framework of bones that supported a dinosaur's body. Fossilized dinosaur skeletons are assembled in museums to show how these animals looked and moved.
CARNIVORE
An animal that eats primarily meat. Carnivorous dinosaurs like T. rex used sharp teeth and strong jaws to hunt and consume other animals.
About Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs were a diverse group of reptiles that dominated Earth for over 160 million years during the Mesozoic Era. Their fossils have been found on every continent, and studying them helps scientists understand evolution, extinction, and Earth's history.
Dinosaurs Vocabulary
This puzzle covers the language of paleontology, from time periods like TRIASSIC, JURASSIC, and CRETACEOUS to classification terms like HERBIVORE, CARNIVORE, and PREDATOR. Students will also find FOSSIL, EXTINCT, and SKELETON.
