Word List
NUCLEUS
The control center of a cell, containing the DNA that carries genetic instructions. The nucleus directs cell growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
MEMBRANE
A thin, flexible layer that surrounds and encloses the cell, regulating what enters and exits. The cell membrane is made of a phospholipid bilayer.
MITOSIS
The process by which a cell divides to produce two identical daughter cells. Mitosis allows organisms to grow, develop, and repair damaged tissues.
RIBOSOME
A small structure in the cell that builds proteins by reading instructions from messenger RNA. Ribosomes are found floating in the cytoplasm and attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.
CYTOPLASM
The jelly-like fluid that fills the inside of a cell, holding organelles in place. The cytoplasm is the site of many chemical reactions that keep the cell alive.
ORGANELLE
A specialized structure inside a cell that performs a specific function. Examples of organelles include the nucleus, mitochondria, and ribosomes.
PROTEIN
A large molecule made of amino acid chains that performs many functions in the body. Proteins act as enzymes, structural materials, hormones, and much more.
ENZYME
A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in living organisms. Enzymes are essential to digestion, metabolism, and DNA replication.
CHROMOSOME
A thread-like structure made of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell. Humans have 46 chromosomes, organized into 23 pairs, containing all genetic information.
VACUOLE
A storage organelle in the cell. Plant cells have one large central vacuole that stores water and helps maintain the cell's structure, while animal cells have smaller vacuoles.
About Cell Biology
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. Every plant, animal, and microorganism is made of cells, which carry out the essential functions of life including growth, energy production, and reproduction.
Cell Biology Vocabulary
This puzzle covers the key structures found inside cells, from the NUCLEUS (which contains DNA) to the RIBOSOME (which builds proteins). Students will also find process terms like MITOSIS and structural components like MEMBRANE and CYTOPLASM.
How to Use This Word Search in Class
Use this word search alongside a cell diagram labeling activity. Students can find each word in the puzzle, then locate it on the diagram to reinforce both the name and location of each organelle. Works well as a study tool before a quiz.
