Word List

DOORBELL
A bell or buzzer outside a door that visitors ring. Trick-or-treaters ring doorbells to ask for candy.
CANDY
A sweet food made with sugar or chocolate. Americans buy hundreds of millions of pounds of candy for Halloween.
TREATS
Special goodies given as a reward or gift. On Halloween, neighbors hand out treats to children in costume.
NEIGHBOR
A person who lives near you. Trick-or-treating is a chance to meet the neighbors.
FLASHLIGHT
A small battery-powered light you carry. A flashlight helps trick-or-treaters see and be seen.
MASK
A covering for the face, often part of a costume. Face paint can be safer because it does not block your view.
BUCKET
A pail with a handle. Many trick-or-treaters carry plastic buckets shaped like pumpkins.
PORCHLIGHT
A light outside a front door. A glowing porch light usually means a house is handing out treats.
SIDEWALK
A paved path along a street for people walking. Staying on the sidewalk keeps trick-or-treaters safe from cars.
CHOCOLATE
A sweet food made from roasted cacao beans. Chocolate bars are among the most popular Halloween treats.

About Trick-or-Treat

Trick-or-treating is a Halloween tradition where children in costumes go from door to door asking for treats. The custom grew from older traditions in Ireland and Scotland and became popular in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s. Today families also focus on staying safe while walking after dark.
