Not an April Fools Joke: Gridl Now Has a Word Scramble Maker

Yes, we are launching a new feature on April 1st. No, it is not a prank. Word scramble is real, it works, and you can use it right now.

We know the timing is suspicious. But teachers have been asking for word scramble puzzles for weeks, and we figured: why wait until April 2nd just to avoid the jokes? So here it is. A fully functional word scramble maker, a browse library with hundreds of free puzzles, and the same print-and-share workflow you already know from every other puzzle type on Gridl.

What Is a Word Scramble?

A word scramble takes a list of vocabulary words and jumbles the letters of each one. Students look at the scrambled letters and figure out the original word. It is one of the most popular worksheet activities in classrooms, and for good reason: it forces students to actively think about spelling, letter patterns, and word recognition instead of passively scanning a list.

If you have used word searches or crosswords on Gridl, word scramble will feel familiar. Same word list in, different puzzle out.

The Builder

Head to /scramble to open the word scramble maker. The layout is the same full-width split panel you see in the crossword and word search editors.

Left panel: Type words one at a time or paste a comma-separated list. Pro users can upload a CSV. Each word appears as a chip below the input.

Right panel: A live preview shows every word with its letters scrambled into individual tiles, followed by an answer blank. The preview updates as you add or remove words.

Three toggles let you customize the worksheet:

  • Word bank: Shows the original words (alphabetically sorted) at the bottom of the puzzle, giving students a hint. Great for younger learners or ESL students.
  • Answer key: Displays the full answer key below the puzzle. Useful for printing a teacher copy.
  • Name/Date header: Adds blank lines for student name and date at the top, turning the puzzle into a proper worksheet handout.

When you are happy with the puzzle, give it a name and hit Save. You will get a shareable link, and Pro users can also set an access code and save to a folder.

The whole thing prints cleanly. Click Print and you get a worksheet with scrambled-letter tiles, answer blanks, and (if toggled on) a word bank and answer key. The answer key starts on its own page so you can hand out the puzzle without giving away the answers.

The Browse Library

We also launched a full browse library at /word-scramble with hundreds of free printable word scramble puzzles organized by topic. The library covers the same categories as our word search collection: history, science, language arts, holidays, geography, and more.

Each topic page includes:

  • A Standard version with all the words and an Easy version with fewer words for younger students
  • Toggleable word bank and answer key
  • A print button for a clean worksheet layout
  • Word definitions so students can learn meaning alongside spelling
  • Related puzzles in the same category, plus a cross-link to the word search version of the same topic

Every word scramble puzzle is free. No account required to play or print.

Same Words, Different Puzzle

One of the best things about word scramble on Gridl is that it works with the same word lists you already use. If you have a vocabulary unit with 15 terms, you can now turn that list into a crossword, a word search, flash cards, a matching game, and a word scramble without re-entering anything.

On the browse side, every word scramble topic links directly to its word search counterpart (and vice versa), so students can practice the same vocabulary in multiple formats.

Try It

We promise this one is real. Happy April 1st.
