Welcome to Gridl: Make Crosswords in Seconds
We built Gridl because making a crossword puzzle shouldn't require graph paper, hours of frustration, or an expensive subscription. Whether you're a teacher looking for a quick vocab review, a parent hoping to make homework a little more fun, or just someone who loves word games, Gridl is for you.
What Is Gridl?
Gridl is a free online puzzle maker. Type in a list of words, hit Generate, and in seconds you have a fully interlocking crossword grid ready to share with anyone. No account required to play. No downloads. Just puzzles.
We also support word search puzzles: enter your words, and we'll hide them in a letter grid for players to find by clicking and dragging in any direction.
How It Works
Making a puzzle takes about 30 seconds:
- Add your words - type any words you want to include, separated by commas or entered one at a time.
- Generate the grid - our algorithm places the words so they interlock like a real crossword.
- Write your clues - add clues manually, or use AI-assisted clue generation if you're signed in.
- Share the link - anyone with the URL can play the puzzle right in their browser.
That's it. No installation, no account wall, no friction.
Built for Classrooms
Teachers have been using Gridl to make vocabulary reviews, spelling practice, and thematic word games. The puzzles are playable on any device (phone, tablet, or laptop) so students can solve them wherever they are.
If you save puzzles to your account (free to create, $15/year for unlimited saves), you can keep a library of puzzles to reuse across semesters or share with colleagues.
What's Coming
We're just getting started. Here's what we're working on:
- Printable PDFs - download a print-ready version of any puzzle for paper worksheets
- Answer key mode - share the solution separately from the puzzle
- Themed puzzle packs - curated word lists for popular topics
