Print and Fold Flash Cards from Any Word List

Gridl's flash card maker now supports printing. Each card prints with the word on one half and the definition on the other, separated by a fold line. Cut and fold, and you have a physical flash card deck from any word list.

How It Works

  1. Go to thegridl.com/flashcards
  2. Add your word and definition pairs
  3. Click Start Flash Cards, then click Print in the sidebar
  4. Each card prints as a foldable rectangle: word on top, definition (upside down) on the bottom
  5. Cut the cards apart, fold along the dashed line, and you have a two-sided flash card

Two cards fit per page, so a 20-word vocabulary list uses 10 sheets.

Why Print?

Digital flash cards are great for individual study, but physical cards open up activities that screens cannot:

Sorting games. Spread cards face-up on a table and have students group them by theme, part of speech, or chapter.

Matching races. Split the deck so half the students hold words and the other half hold definitions. Students walk around the room to find their match.

Quiz-quiz-trade. Each student holds one card, quizzes a partner, then they swap cards and find someone new. The whole class cycles through the deck.

Station rotations. Leave a printed deck at a vocabulary station alongside a word search and crossword from the same word list.

One Word List, Multiple Activities

The flash card maker shares the same workflow as every other Gridl tool. Enter your words once and you can create a crossword, word search, matching game, and now a printed flash card deck from the same vocabulary. The Lesson Planner generates all of these at once if you want to save time.

Tips for Printing

  • Use cardstock if you have it. Regular paper works, but cardstock holds up better when students handle the cards repeatedly.
  • Print in grayscale. The cards are black and white by design, so color ink is not needed.
  • Laminate for reuse. If you plan to use the same deck across multiple class periods or semesters, laminating the folded cards makes them last.
  • Toggle the Name/Date header in the sidebar if you want students to label their set.
