You Can Now Copy Any Premade Crossword Into the Editor

We have over a hundred free crossword puzzles on Gridl covering history, science, literature, math, and more. Until now, those puzzles were read-only: you could play them, print them, and show the answer key, but you could not change anything.

That changes today.

Copy & Edit

Every premade crossword now has a Copy & Edit button in the action bar at the top of the page. Click it and Gridl saves a copy of the puzzle to your account and opens it in the editor, with all the words and clues already loaded.

From there you can do anything you would do with a puzzle you built from scratch:

• Add or remove words
• Rewrite any clue
• Reposition words on the grid
• Change the background color or pattern
• Add a description or name/date header for printing
• Save it with your own title and share it with a link

Your copy is completely independent of the original. Changes you make do not affect the premade version, and the original stays exactly as it was for everyone else.

Why This Is Useful

The premade puzzles are a solid starting point, but every class is different. Maybe the puzzle has 20 words and you only need 10. Maybe you want to swap out a few terms for ones from your textbook. Maybe the clues are written at the wrong level for your students.

Now you can take what we have built and make it yours in a couple of minutes instead of starting from a blank word list.

How to Use It

1. Browse the puzzle library at /crossword/topics
2. Open any puzzle
3. Click Copy & Edit
4. If you are not signed in, you will be prompted to log in or create a free account
5. The editor opens with the puzzle ready to customize
6. Make your changes, then save and share

A free account is all you need to copy a puzzle. No subscription required.
