Back to School Puzzles: 26 New Printables for the First Weeks

The first two weeks of school are their own kind of teaching. You are learning names, setting routines, and filling the gaps between an assembly and a fire drill with something that is actually worth doing. So we built the puzzles for it.

Twenty-six new printable puzzles are live: a brand new Back to School category, plus six seasonal puzzles for September and early fall. Every one of them is free to print, and every one comes with an answer key.

The New Back to School Category

Six topics, each available as both a word search and a crossword:

• Back to School (crossword): the general first-day vocabulary, good for day one with any grade.
• School Supplies (crossword): pencils, glue, scissors, notebooks. Pairs well with supply-sorting on the first morning.
• Classroom Objects (crossword): the things around the room, useful for a room tour or scavenger hunt.
• All About Me (crossword): favorites, family, and interests, for the getting-to-know-you week.
• Classroom Rules (crossword): the expectations vocabulary, so the rules conversation has something to hang on.
• School Helpers (crossword): the nurse, the custodian, the librarian, the people students should know by name.

Six More for September

These landed in the holidays and seasons category, and they cover what actually shows up on the calendar in the first six weeks:

• Fall and Autumn (crossword): leaves, harvest, and cool weather.
• Apples (crossword): the September apple unit, orchard to cider.
• Constitution Day (crossword): September 17, and useful if your school has to document the observance.
• Labor Day (crossword): the history behind the long weekend.
• Hispanic Heritage Month (crossword): September 15 through October 15.
• Fire Safety (crossword): Fire Prevention Week in October.

Each topic page includes the printable puzzle, an answer key, word definitions, and a short note on where it fits in a lesson. Grade levels run from kindergarten through middle school depending on the topic.

Make Them Your Own
