Back to School Puzzles: 26 New Printables for the First Weeks

The first two weeks of school are their own kind of teaching. You are learning names, setting routines, and filling the gaps between an assembly and a fire drill with something that is actually worth doing. So we built the puzzles for it.

Twenty-six new printable puzzles are live: a brand new Back to School category, plus six seasonal puzzles for September and early fall. Every one of them is free to print, and every one comes with an answer key.

The New Back to School Category

Six topics, each available as both a word search and a crossword:

Six More for September

These landed in the holidays and seasons category, and they cover what actually shows up on the calendar in the first six weeks:

Each topic page includes the printable puzzle, an answer key, word definitions, and a short note on where it fits in a lesson. Grade levels run from kindergarten through middle school depending on the topic.

Make Them Your Own

The printables are ready to go, but the more useful move is to open one in the editor and change it. Every topic page has a button that loads those words into the builder, where you can swap in your own vocabulary, change the grid size, adjust the difficulty, or add your class name to the header.

That is the whole idea behind Gridl: start from something that already works, then bend it to your room.

Start the Year with the Whole Toolkit

Word searches and crosswords are the two we just added to, but the first weeks of school ask for more than that. Everything below builds from a list of words you type once:

And if you save your vocabulary as a Word List first, all of those build from the same list in a click, which is the difference between typing your unit words once and typing them six times.

Set Up Before the Rush

If you are going to do one thing this week, make it this: create a free account and save the puzzles you want for the first two weeks now, while you still have time to look at them. Open any puzzle from the Back to School collection, hit save, and it lands in your dashboard, ready to print on the first Monday.

A free account gets you saved puzzles, the full printable library, and the builders for every activity type. If you want unlimited puzzles, folders to organize by unit, AI-written clues, CSV upload, and access codes for students to play online, Pro covers all of it.

Have a topic you want for the fall that we have not built yet? Tell us. A good chunk of what we add comes from teachers asking for it.
